My research interests include using corpora to find evidence for language in use, and modelling language using a Systemic Functional framework. I am particularly interested in how a Systemic Functional grammar is useful for language generation. The title of my PhD thesis is 'MORE DELICATE TRANSITIVITY: extending the Process Type system networks for English to include full semantic classifications.' The summary for my thesis is available here. The full thesis is available to download here. |

The data for my thesis - the Process Type Database - is available to access from this site. I have made this database available for consultation by people interested in seeing how it is possible to analyse a large number (c.5400) of Verb Senses using the Cardiff Grammar as a framework. Before accessing the (PTDB), which is in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, please first read this document, which provides instructions for searching the data. Further, the PTDB will be best accessed in conjunction with Chapter 2 of Fawcett, R., forthcoming. The Functional Semantics Handbook: Analyzing English at the level of meaning. London: Continuum. This chapter is not yet published, but may be available directly from Robin Fawcett. The first version of the PTDB (March 2002) can be downloaded here. It is my intention that this should be a living document, and so changes and additions will be made.

My role at ITRI involves raising the commercial visibility of the research in the HLT field conducted in the department. For more information about the department and its activities, follow this link. I have also been the UK coordinator for the Euromap Language Technology project (for which ITRI was the UK node), which completed its work in April 2003. Euromap was an EC funded 'Accompanying Measure', and the aim of the project was to provide awareness, bridge-building and market-enabling services to boost opportunities for market take-up of the results of European and UK Human Language Technology (HLT) research and development activities. For more information on the project, and on what HLT is, follow this link
